Life without Facebook- Week One

I have had many people asking me about how my life without Facebook has been going. When a workmate asked me about it I raved on about how much I was loving it and didn't miss it at all- and then she reminded me that it had only been 24 hours. Ha!

Now that it has been a week, I feel like I have a much better picture of how I am finding it. I've split it into the good and the bad.

The Good
- Now that I am not checking Facebook in the morning, I have been able to make time read the Bible first thing when I wake up. I am currently reading the Ephesians reading plan from She Reads Truth to coincide with my Bible study at church, and loving it. It is a great way to start my day.

- I am a much safer driver. I am ashamed to say that, when waiting in traffic on my way home from work, I would use my mobile to check Facebook. I know that it's against the law and I know that it is dangerous, but I really struggled to not do it. Now? My phone doesn't even leave my bag, meaning I and the drivers around me are much safer on the road.

- I actually have things to talk about when I see my friends rather than relying on statuses to keep me updated.

- My friends are keeping me updated if there is any big news (i.e. an engagement or wedding photos being put online), so I am not feeling too out of the loop.

- I am not feeling as overwhelmed with trying to keep up with social media and I have more time as I am not wasting it stalking people on Facebook.

The Bad
- It is hard to keep up to date with events etc and am having to rely on Joel a bit to communicate with people in a group forum. My church communicates almost 100% with each other via Facebook pages that they have set up for groups and congregations, so that makes it a bit tricky.

- I am using Instagram more. I'll probably end up having to give that up too! Thankfully Instagram isn't as consuming as Facebook.

- I care about the 'little' things in life, so while I am finding out about the big things in people's lives, I do miss hearing all the little things. Thanks to Jess though for texting me to let me know that she was caught by one of her students dancing in her car while driving. That's the sort of stuff I miss hearing about!

- I'm a little lost without my regular Facebook status updates. I have realised that I think in 'statuses'. Regularly throughout the day I find myself creating a 'status' in my head and miss being able to share it with people. I think it will take awhile to get rid of that habit!

So, do I think I am going to last the 40 days? Yes, I most certainly will. Is it going to start any long term change? I am really not sure. I am keen to not reinstall the app on my phone and to keep the notifications switched off. I am hopeful that by the end of the 40 days I will have rid myself of my reliance on Facebook  so that I won't have to check it as regularly. Only time will tell I suppose...

You tricked me with that rabbit picture! :D

Lately I've been feeling the need to give up FB....it really felt so much better. I wish there was a way I could only sign into my Blogs FB.

I gave up Facebook for a while and it was refreshing. That wasn't a permanent change, though, so to make a more permanent change I'm trying to cut back on my time.

I love how you say you think in statuses. That's so true! It's funny what social media has done to us.

I don't use FB too much but I find it useful that I've set it up to get particular notifications straight to my email inbox. I use twitter a bit more but even then it's not too bad :)

Am proud that you are doing so well without Facebook! It really can be so all intrusive in how you communicate with people as not everyone likes to use that form to communicate through. The good old fashioned way of actually talking to people, reading notice boards etc can sometimes have its rewards! I find the personal approach means more to people than through a public forum. I think that these forums most certainly have their uses ie. showing photos, and keeping in touch with people who don't live close, but you just can't beat seeing people's faces, reactions, emotions etc. when you tell them your update face to face! I love that you are having this break, and if you do go back to it try to limit it to checking it perhaps in the evening? Keep going sweetheart. Loves xx
